VERSUS is a two-part album that brings together the Gamelark and Materia Community VGM communites to celebrate decades of fighting music: 47 tracks of fighting game covers, just in time for the 2016 Evolution Champion Series. The album brings in music from world-renown games including Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Pokken Tournament, Mortal Kombat, Tekken, among many others. “VERSUS was a perfect opportunity to show the collaborative nature of the VGM community,” says Allen Brasch, founder and head of GameLark. “We see countless collaborations between individual artists so I thought, why not collaborate between labels?”
Allen Brasch and Sebastian Wolff set up the album to be a friendly competition between the two groups, in the spirit of collaboration and of the fighting game genre.
“I think that both GameLark and Materia Community artists felt compelled to do their best work on this album,” says Brasch. “There was a friendly competition between the labels, but it happened in the best way possible. Everyone was trying to top themselves, to make the best track they could, and I think the end result shows that.”
