Ever since this game (and its soundtrack) came out, I've wanted to put a cover together with my sister-in-law, and frequent collaborator, Stephanie Smith. She's an incredibly moving musical talent and adds so much to my work. While I'd have liked to do something a bit more involved to allow her to really shine, the quick turnaround on this project required a simple, minimalist approach.
Modifying Sebastian Wolff's excellent piano arrangement as a foundation, Stephanie layered flute and vocals in a unique, almost maternal way, as if Naru was singing Ori to sleep. It has the feel of a lullaby, but more than a bit melancholic given the circumstances that follow.
While it's more or less a direct cover of Gareth Coker's original piece, hopefully you find it revealing when stripped down to these few elements.
