I’ve been wanting to create this arrangement of “Reunion” ever since I first played Final Fantasy VII. It made such an impression on me and I just knew it would come to life in an orchestral setting - not to mention I’ve always had a soft spot for dark waltzes!
Though this track has a waltz-like feel to it, it is an anxious dance, full of uncertainty and a sense of dread. The harmonic center keeps shifting unexpectedly; the string accompaniment pulses back and forth like a beating heart, and no cadence ever feels truly resolved. “Reunion” appears at a pivotal scene in the storyline, and is the perfectly chilling accompaniment to Cloud’s realization of his true past, as his sense of identity is shattered.
The word “reunion” is typically associated with a happy gathering of friends and family. Obviously that’s not how it plays out in the game! I tried to capture that essence of both despair and beauty that Uematsu fused together so well in 1997, using harp, strings, and woodwinds.
