For many people, Aerith is the most beloved part of their favorite game. Beautiful, mysterious, kind, and a little playful, she is definitely one of FFVII's most memorable characters. Yet FFVII isn't the only part of her story—she also plays an important role in Crisis Core. I've always been partial to the sort of late 1990s/early 2000s alternative rock that colors Crisis Core's guitar-heavy soundtrack. With this track, I wanted to capture some of the power of Crisis Core's The Price of Freedom, referencing Aerith's relationship to Zack. There's even a bass riff at the beginning blatantly borrowed from that song. The lyrics themselves are a call-and-answer between Aerith and Zack (in the first verse) and Aerith and Cloud (in the second verse).
I've never arranged a piece that is such a departure from the original. And I've never mixed a rock song before, though I lead a rock band. This was a great adventure for me and I was fortunate enough to be joined by some very, very talented collaborators. Except for Juja, I'd never worked with any of them before—but they blew me away with their contributions!
