My arrangement of The Frostlands takes many of the elements found in the original and twists it around a bit. How would this piece flow and change if a pop brass, rock-styled ensemble turned it into a ballad? How can it still hit the same tone and vibe while also allowing a new, fresh approach with different instruments steering the ship? My initial thought was “I must have flugelhorn in this arrangement!” I also knew I wanted to emulate, to a degree, some of the pop brass instrumentations I’ve seen in other groups before: 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 alto saxes and 1 tenor and 1 baritone sax. This is on top of the rhythm section that included drums, bass, electric guitar, piano and a jazz organ. As the piece continued to evolve, I added in strings, a solo piano section along with solo female voice.
