Final Fantasy IX is bookended by “I Want to Be Your Canary,” a stage play performed by the members of the Tantalus Theater Troupe. “Canary”, laden with classic Shakespearean trappings, uses themes and motifs that reflect the arcs the characters take throughout the game. Nobuo Uematsu’s score for the play is ripe with lyrical melodies that translate well to voice, so the approach of a musical theatre arrangement was a natural fit. Our goal was to transport the listener fully into the game, so that they can experience its beautiful finale in an entirely new and refreshing way. And now, without further ado, we hope you enjoy tonight’s performance of “I Want to Be Your Canary!”
